Here's the actual breakdown: Misconduct and Fees, 15 questions, the single largest category by a wide margin. Notarial Acts and Documentation, 12. Administrative Procedures, 5. Identification and Subscribing Witness Notarizations, 4. Immigration and Foreign Language provisions, 4. Misconduct/Fees and Notarial Acts/Documentation alone account for 27 of your 40 scored questions, better than two-thirds of the exam.

Misconduct and Fees earning that much weight makes sense once you consider how tightly California regulates what a notary can legally charge and what constitutes misconduct, and it's exactly the area well-prepared candidates most often underestimate because "fees" sounds like a minor administrative footnote rather than the largest tested category.

Passing isn't the last step, either. Fingerprinting and a background check come after, information gets mailed specifically to applicants who pass, so budget time for that stage separately from exam prep. Education runs 6 hours for new applicants, 3 for renewals, and a failed attempt means waiting a month before retesting.

Since two categories carry more than two-thirds of your score, practicing evenly across all five leaves you relatively exposed on the ones that matter most. Our questions weight accordingly.
